SSL wildcard common name question

Discussion in 'General troubleshooting' started by dansa, Feb 29, 2012.

  1. Hi

I want to purchase a RapidSSL wildcard certificate but have a question about the common name. I want the main website and any subdomains to be secure:

    https://www.mysite.co.uk
    https://sub1.mysite.co.uk
    https://sub2.mysite.co.uk

When generating the CSR what common name do I use? Just "www.mysite.co.uk" and the fact that I purchase a RapidSSL will mean the above examples urls will be secure?

I've look at the following link but it's not 100% and I don't want to make a mistake!

    thanks in advance.

    This means that:

https://www.mysite.co.uk will be secured if you use *.HostingAccountDomain.com as the command name.
https://sub1.mysite.co.uk will be secured if you use *.HostingAccountDomain.com as the command name.
https://sub2.mysite.co.uk will be secured if you use *.HostingAccountDomain.com as the command name.

But if you try to use https://mysite.co.uk it will cause "Common Name Doesn't Match" browser warning

    ----------------

If you use www.mysite.co.uk as the command name. Only www.mysite.co.uk will be secured.

https://AnythingElse.MySite.co.uk will cause "Common Name Doesn't Match" browser warning

  3. cheers for clarifying ComputerMan :)
