How does the DNS protocol convert IP names into numbers?

Discussion in 'DNS/Domain names' started by walacie, Jan 12, 2012.

  1. How does a machine that knows the IP name of a site it wants to talk to do will convert this into an IP number using the DNS protocol??

  2. Trying to make this sound simple:

When you type in a domain, like "walacie.com" onto the browser, it'll first look for the domain name servers (eg. ns1.Winhost.com), then the name server will say something like "we have walacie.com in our records, and it points to [insert IP]".

You can also view a few articles on how this works, here:
