You can always change the common name however this usually means starting the whole SSL process over so that you can create a new CSR with the common name in question and having the SSL provider supply a new certificate.
That's not what he said. He said you can change it, but you'll probably have to buy a new certificate. Unless you can convince the certificate issuer to regenerate the cert, which is not likely to happen.
