Questions on database backups

So I know how to make a DB backup. It puts it on a "D" drive somewhere. Am I reading everything correctly that I don't have access to the backup file that gets created without paying a $30 fee? And there's no way for me to restore the backup, either?

If I can get to the backup *without* paying the $30 fee, where do I find it?
