MIME error for .dat files

Discussion in 'General troubleshooting' started by Stanford Douglas, Jul 3, 2015.

  1. I have around 400 small files that contain engineering performance data for model aircraft propellers. This are used primarily by engineering schools. All the files end in the extension .DAT and can be accessed by text editors, but also are used as input to engineering programs. I get the following error.

The page you are requesting cannot be served because of the extension configuration. If the page is a script, add a handler. If the file should be downloaded, add a MIME map.

I list the files with this asp and the user then clicks on the file he/she wants.:
    http://apcserve.w20.wh-2.com/v/PERFILES_WEB/ServerListDataFiles.asp

Can I add this MIME file type my self or is this a IIS admin function? As a temporary solution I made all the files into a .zip file and that works ok.

    Regards,
    Stan

    Hi Stan,

Yes. You just need to use IIS 7 Manager to connect to your site. On the right, there is a module for MIME type (icon). Double click on it to add a MIME type for the .dat file.
