Domain Pointers (again)

  1. Hi there,

I've been searching the forums looking for an answer to this, but can't seem to find anything.

I've got two domain names registered with a registrar (a .com and a .ca), both of those domain names currently point to a website being hosted somewhere other than Winhost (both domain names point to the same website).

Recently we created a Winhost account for this website as we wish to move the website from the current host. In order to test the setup, I created an A record on the .com domain to point to the IP address of the Winhost account, and set up the appropriate DNS on the Winhost account to listen for it.
i.e. test.domain.com points to the IP address of my Winhost account.

    This works perfectly.

I've since set up a domain pointer for the .ca website on my Winhost account, set up an A record on the domain to point test.domain.ca to the Winhost account IP address, and I've set up the appropriate DNS on my Winhost account to listen for that. The problem is that the setup doesn't appear to work as I was expecting, and when visiting test.domain.ca I get a "Webpage is Unavailable" page served up by Winhost.

Can anyone explain to me what I'm doing wrong?

    Thanks.
    Nick.

It sounds like you have a shared IP address in which case you need to setup the host header entry for test.domain.ca. Of course I am assuming that test.domain.ca is an example.

But regardless, log into your Winhost control panel go to the Site Info Manager page of your account, go to domain pointers and create a domain pointer entry for test.domain.ca. This will create the host header entry so that test.domain.ca is directed to the proper root.

  3. Hi Ray,

Thanks very much for your prompt reply.
Originally, when I added the domain.ca domain pointer, it provided me a new domain in my domain list. I clicked the 'Manage' link on this domain and got the DNS manager for the domain. From there I added an A record for test.domain.ca. By all accounts that should have done what I needed, right?

I did look to add test.domain.ca as a domain pointer originally, but the page that I get when I set up the domain pointer shows the input textbox prefixed with www - which was a bit confusing as I did not want to create a www.test.domain.ca record.

Anyway, I've ignored this and taken your advice and created a domain pointer www.test.domain.ca. I've since gone into the DNS Manager for that domain pointer and removed the www.test.domain.ca record that was created, and also removed my original domain.ca record too.

Everything appears to be working now.

    Thanks.

    Cheers,
    Nick.

  4. Glad it's working out for you.
