can I use a self signed certificate?

Hi,

I am wanting to create a database and a WCF service but I want the data encrypted but the app I am developing to talk to the service will only be used by myself so I am not worried about 'identity verification' so I was hoping to be able to create my own self signed certificate and use that? is that possible here?

Are there any resources that any once can point me too if it is possible?
