DNN install issues

Discussion in 'Third-party applications' started by NickBloodworth, Jan 15, 2010.

  1. Hi,

    I've installed DNN on my website in a seperate folder. It runs through the wizard but gives me some errors when it does the database part. It says the dnn_user doesn't have enough permissions.

    It then carries on and the rest is a success. It then runs a 5.0.2 upgrade which fails the first few items (I assume it's the ones that it didn't create at the start) but the rest are a success.

    After that, I go to my portal, where it gives an error saying Windows Vista is not a valid domain or something like that.

    Any ideas anyone, please?

    Nick, we need the full and exact error message your application is throwing. It will be extremely important to also have the full and exact error message when DNN tried setting up the objects on your database. The database is very important to DNN.

  3. Hi,

    The error says "Failure installing Database Scripts"

    The installation error is "Installing Database - Version 05.00.00...FAILURE ERROR: See E:\web\nixitcou\dnn\Providers\DataProviders\SqlDataProvider\05.00.00.log for more information"

    It then seems to stop the install (or it takes ages)

    Have you check the log? (see 05.00.01.log for more information)

    Try navigating to the folder where this log should have been generated. Should be under teh Providers folder.

    How do you have the connection string coded? Look in the web.config file. It should be under the element (<connectionStrings>). Make sure it is coded in this format.

    <connectionStrings>
    <remove name="LocalSqlServer" />
    <add name="LocalSqlServer" connectionString="Data Source=DBServerName;Integrated Security=false;Initial Catalog=DBName;User ID=DBLogin;Password=DBPassword" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />
    </connectionStrings>

    This format is just an example, and the name "LocalSQLServer" maybe different.

  7. I'm pretty sure that the installation for the latest versions of DNN requires GRANT permissions for your database user which you do not have (and we cannot give you). Your db user is DBO, but the GRANT permission is not available because allowing it would create security issues on a shared database server. I don't know if this is the entire problem with your install, but it's a big enough problem to make it fail. We have seen this in DNN upgrades from 5.2.0 to 5.2.1, and I see that your install is referencing 5.2.1.

    It is a common problem with the latest versions of DNN and it has broken the install process at many shared hosts. Unfortunately we do not have an answer for the problem. DNN has never been particularly shared-hosting-friendly, but it would appear that they really are not interested in the shared hosting market at all, considering this move.

  8. just uploaded 4.9.6 and now get this error
    Server Error in '/dnn' Application.
    Runtime Error
    Description: An application error occurred on the server. The current custom error settings for this application prevent the details of the application error from being viewed remotely (for security reasons). It could, however, be viewed by browsers running on the local server machine.

    Details: To enable the details of this specific error message to be viewable on remote machines, please create a <customErrors> tag within a "web.config" configuration file located in the root directory of the current web application. This <customErrors> tag should then have its "mode" attribute set to "Off".

    <!-- Web.Config Configuration File -->

    <configuration>
    <system.web>
    <customErrors mode="Off"/>
    </system.web>
    </configuration>

    Notes: The current error page you are seeing can be replaced by a custom error page by modifying the "defaultRedirect" attribute of the application's <customErrors> configuration tag to point to a custom error page URL.

    <!-- Web.Config Configuration File -->

    <configuration>
    <system.web>
    <customErrors mode="RemoteOnly" defaultRedirect="mycustompage.htm"/>
    </system.web>
    </configuration>

    Think I'll give it up as a bad job

  9. How did other people get DNN websites working? If I designed them locally on my PC, rather than on the server and then upload them, will this get round the permissions issue?

    Is there a similar product (free) that I can use instead?

    The error message...

    ...Is telling you to set your customerror to off. Try setting it to off so we can see the true error message.

  11. I have a similar problem when I install DNN 5.02, I get an error that the server has no written permission on folders is weird because I and 2 for installed Winhost portals and have never had any problem.

  12. Hi Guys - for what it's worth I've come to the same conclusion as Hank. GRANT permissions does seem to be part of the issue with the latest flavours of DNN 5. I have another shared hosting account and have been advised that a DNN install requires some expertise and that they prefer to perform the install themselves - at a price of course. I suspect that because the install is performed under their control they can relax db permissions whilst they perform the install.

    I have managed to get DNN 4.9.5 installed here and it's working fine. I'm a little upset that it appears I cannot take advantage of DNN 5. I will investigate further through their forums as this doesn't seem fair :(

    Or - perhaps if there is sufficient interest in installing DNN 5.x, Winhost could come up with a compromise on GRANT permissions for installation purposes only?

  13. Could you please let me know what server you are hosted on. I'm on s02.Winhost.com however someone else has successful installed dnn on s01.Winhost.com .

    Thanks.

    hiunkeru -- what DNN version are you trying to install on the server? In DNN's website there are two versions you can download. You can either try the 30 trial version of the professional edition or the community version which is a free download from DNN.

    What version did you use. I see two DNN applications that can be downloaded from DNN's website. One is the Professional edition whichi gives you a 30 day free trial and the other is the community version which is free. I was able to install the community version without any problems but the professional edition gave me some problems. I'm not sure what it is I'm still testing it out. But the free community version of DNN should work with all the Winhosts web servers and SQL servers.
